Hypnosis Gains Mainstream Acceptance

The use of hypnosis in affecting change in people’s life is receiving more “mainstream” attention in medical as well as other professional settings.

As more people become aware that there is a difference between hypnosis and stage hypnosis, the benefits of  using hypnotic techniques to bring about changes related to clients health and well being is becoming more widely accepted and recognized.

Arnold B. Coven,  associate   professor in Counseling  and   Education at   Wayne State  University,  suggests   in    speaking of hypnosis, “What appeals  to  believers is  that   hypnosis is  not a  chemical   injected into the  bloodstream, or a pill that has to be taken.  Instead, it is a natural and, for many, easy way to achieve desired results.”

Coven related a story about a medical doctor he knows who used hypnosis during surgery to avoid undergoing anesthesia

As the medical community comes to appreciate and   perhaps  utilize  hypnosis as a  part of  an overall    health     regimen for      their      patients, it helps to  educate the public  in   understanding the benefits that hypnosis and related techniques can bring to their lives.

Hypnosis: Altered state of consciousness

The Mayo clinic has published an article about hypnosis and it’s usefulness as a treatment option.  They suggest that hypnosis, a trance-like state of focused attention, appears to help a variety of health conditions.

This state of focus can block outside distractions leaving the client more open to suggestion for improving health and well-being.

This article points out that according to preliminary studies, hypnosis can be used to:

1.Reduce symptoms of Irritable  Bowel     Syndrome
2.Control   childbirth Pain
3.Change behaviors
4.Reduce stress, fear, anxiety
5.Enhance immune system function
6.And much more.

This article also speaks to the myths and realities of hypnosis, and how while in the hypnotic state, the brain and body seem to communicate in specific and meaningful ways.

Experts Back use of Hypnosis for Terminally Ill:  Claims of Treatment Boosting Immune System.

Cancer-care facilities in Glasgow, Scotland are studying the benefits of using hypnosis with terminally ill clients.

At Marie Curies Hunter Hill Hospice leaders claim that “without exception the treatment has benefited patients.” Hypnotists are using and teaching visualization and self-hypnosis techniques to their clients.

Susan   Monroe,  caring  services   manager    for

Scotland at Marie Curie’s Cancer Care says that “in 100% of cases” patients reported benefits from hypnosis.

Dame Gill Oliver, director of service development at another local cancer care facility says: “Hypnosis gives the patient back some control over their body and can help people deal with the side-effects of chemotherapy.” A study published this fall in the UK related

that it seems hypnosis can be of benefit in reducing cancer related pain.
The publisher feels that further study in this area is certainly warranted.

October 2004 - Hypnosis News Here and Around The World

Altered States:  Hypnosis can help with problems from anxiety to pain.  How it works, and what it does in the brain.

Research suggests that the age-old practice of hypnosis can be an effective tool in the treatment of a many client issues from chronic pain to anxiety.  Recent studies have been done using state- of- the- art imaging technology, which help to explain the actual changes happening in the brain when a person is hypnotized.    This is exciting news for those who practice hypnosis and the clients that can benefit from it’s application.

Understanding hypnosis and how it works brings new light to this ancient technique.  One misconception regarding hypnosis is that is takes

away a person's control.  Dr. David Spiegel, professor and associate chair of psychiatry at Stanford University School of Medicine suggests: “It’s actually a way of enhancing people’s control, of teaching them how to control aspects of their body’s function and sensation that they thought they couldn’t.”

Hypnosis has been used successfully in enhancing athletic performance, chronic pain management, treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, alternative sedation during medical procedures, habit control, and much more.

This makes hypnosis a viable option for patients who are searching for more holistically based methods of treatment.

Hypnosis for Chronic Pain

The Dr. Sebastian Schultz-Stubner, an anesthesiologist at the University of Iowa
Hospitals and Clinics uses hypnosis with clients who experience chronic pain.  He relates that studies done using hypnosis for pain management suggest that 65%-70% of patients are able to find pain relief using hypnosis. Schultz-Stuber has also used hypnosis in the operating room as an alternative to drug-

induced sedation. Misconceptions abound concerning hypno-sis which can cause uneasiness in patients who are not properly educated about the process. As Dr. Schultz-Stubner states: "The hypnotist is only helping them with the suggestions, giving them a type of cooking recipe, how to achieve this state, but it is not really him doing it."

The hypnotist is the guide and the patient by following his instructions can achieve this altered state.

Hypnotist Cures Lorraine’s Crippling Fear

Lorraine Pitt, a 44 year old woman with chronic agoraphobia is able to leave her home after 15 years due to undergoing treatment from a local hypnotist in her area.

She had lived with this “fear of open spaces” for years.   This client felt like a prisoner in her own home.

The hypnotist in this case used a technique called Neuro-linguistic programming and hypnosis to help ally Lorraine ’s fears. Through this technique, Adams; the hypnotist says: “We find out what happens in the mind and how it sustains a phobia, we pay attention to the patient.”

Once relegated to her home environment, Lorraine is now able to be independent and live her life again. She attributes her new lifestyle to these hypnotic techniques.

Hypnosis Doubles IVF Treatment Success Rate

Scientists in Israel recently discovered that hypnosis can double a women’s chances of getting pregnant after in-vitro fertilization treatment. In this study, a group of 89 women were  hypnotized  during  embryo implantation.

This can normally be a stressful procedure for women, as no anesthesia is used during implantation.

Another group of 96 women, who did not undergo hypnosis during in-vitro fertilization, were only about half as successful in conception as the first group.

Dr. Elihu Levitas, the leader of the study suggests that: “the favorable outcome may be explained by the tranquilizing effect which leads to stress reduction and down regulation of the autonomic nervous system.”

He believes that patients should be given the option of undergoing hypnosis during this procedure if available in medical facilities.

The Future of Golf:
Special Report Part II

The game of golf relies on focus and concen-tration.  Developing one’s mental capacities can help improve golf performance.  As top athletes in any field have shown, there can be a sense of “Flow” or “Being in the Zone” that tremendously enhances athletic performance and confidence.

Joe Parent, the author of “Zen Golf” says:  “More of today’s players are learning to

trust their technique to feeling or images ruled by the intuitive mind rather than engaging the thinking mind with how they intend to do it.”

Hypnosis and other various focusing techniques are being taught by coaches and sports psychologists today, to help players advance their mental skills and

concentration in order to more reliably use the golf skills and techniques that they perform on a regular basis.
